Bulgaria:
1. Location:
• A CULTURAL Treasure trove stuffed to bursting with ancient monasteries, churches, mosques and Roman and Byzantine ruins, Bulgaria is located in the very heart of the Balkan Peninsula. It is bordered on the North by Romania, on the East by the Black Sea, on the South by Turkey and Greece, and on the West by Serbia and Montenegro and Macedonia.
2. Rilef:
• The Bulgarian mountains which occupy half of the country’s territory, are easily accessible, and are a prime destination for both winter and summer tourist activities, including skiing, hiking, fishing, canoeing. The major mountain ranges are Rila, Pirin, Rhodope and Stara Planina. Mussala peak in the Rila mountain range is the highest point on the Balkan Peninsula.
• Long beaches with fine white sand cover much of the Black sea coast. The sea itself is less salty and warmer than the Mediterranean. The tourism sector has flourished in recent years and holds a firm lead in the Bulgarian economy.
3. Climate:
• Bulgaria has cold, damp winters and hot, dry summers. The Rodopi Mountains form a barrier to the Mediterranean warmth of the Aegean, while the Danube Plain is open to the extremes of central Europe.
Sofia has a generally favourable climate, with average daily highs of 28C in July and August and 3C from December to February. Rainfall is highest in the mountains and heavy snowfalls are a feature of winter.
Along the Black Sea coast, which is very popular with holidaymakers, average January temperature is –1C and 6C, and between 19C and 30C in July.
4. Facts:
• The country recently became full member of NATO, is currently pegged to the euro and has received formal invitation into the European Union in 2007. The likelihood of membership is high, as Bulgaria has complied with 26 out of 30EU accession criteria.
• There is an established tourist industry that has increase with 20-30 percent for the last year.
• Bulgaria has the highest number of foreign investors in Eastern Europe which have contributed to Bulgaria’s extraordinary market growth over the past two years which remain solid – perhaps even more so as EU membership draws closer.
• Rates of taxation are low compared to the rest of Europe.
Annual inflation is currently 3.8 per cent and the country enjoys one of the highest economic growth rates in Europe at 4.5 per cent.
• There are regular direct flights from London Gatwick to Sofia take two-and-a-half to tree hours, and there are also direct flights to Varna and Burgas in the summer season true Bulgaria Air and British Airlines. Budget airlines are also flying now to Bulgaria.
• Location, location, location.
Istanbul is but five hours away from Sofia by car Salonika is four hours away Budapest seven hours and you can drive from both Pamporovo and Bansko to the Greek border for about four hours.
